How we research

Every recommendation on HomeDosh comes from research you could repeat yourself. Here is what we read, how we weigh it, and what we don’t claim.

Last updated

The short version

  • We build each guide from maker documents (manuals, spec sheets, hoop and accessory lists), owner reports collected over months, and store and warranty terms.
  • We don’t claim hands-on testing. If a guide is ever based on using a product ourselves, it will say so in the first lines, with photos and notes.
  • Every guide shows the date we last checked it, the sources it rests on and a short log of what changed.
  • Paid links never decide which product we recommend or in which order.

What we read

Maker documents

Manuals, spec sheets and accessory compatibility lists are the most reliable facts about a product: throat space, stitch count, hoop sizes, needle system, motor rating, what comes in the box. When a number appears in a guide, it should trace back to one of these. Where we convert units (millimeters to inches, for example), we say so.

Owner reports

Specs don’t tell you that a bobbin case is fussy or that a foot pedal creeps across the floor. For that we read long-running owner discussions, detailed reviews on sewing and quilting forums, and patterns in verified-buyer reviews. One angry review is noise. The same complaint from many owners over a year is a finding, and it goes into “Keep in mind”.

Store and warranty terms

Warranty length, who services the machine, and the return window matter as much as features, especially for a first machine. We note them where they differ in a way that should change your choice.

How we pick

  1. Start from the project. We define who the guide is for: beginners, garment sewists, quilters with big quilts, people embroidering caps.
  2. Build a long list from what is sold in the US now, not discontinued models.
  3. Cut by documented specs that matter for that project, such as throat space for quilting or sewing field for embroidery.
  4. Weigh owner reports for reliability, service and the things specs miss.
  5. Name a role for each pick (“Best for denim and bags”) and say who should skip it.

Each pick carries a “How we know” line that names the kind of evidence behind it.

Prices and availability

Prices change daily, so we don’t print them. Buttons say “See it at” and take you to the store.

Updates and corrections

We recheck guides when models change and at least once a year. The “Checked” date at the top of each guide is the last full review; the “What changed” log at the end lists what we changed and when.

If something is wrong, tell us at contact@homedosh.com. We fix factual errors promptly and note the fix in the guide’s change log.

Independence

We don’t accept payment for placement or for positive coverage, and brands don’t review guides before publication. If a company sends us a product, we will say so in the guide. How the site is funded is explained in our affiliate disclosure.
