Crochet Egg Rug Pattern: Fried Egg Rug in 4 Sizes
A scalable fried egg rug recipe: four sizes, round counts, yarn amounts and a puffy yolk.
The short answer
A crochet egg rug is a flat single-crochet circle. Start with 6 sc and add 6 stitches every round. Work every 9th round without increases so the circle stays flat at this gauge. Make the first third of the diameter yellow (the yolk), switch to white, then shape the last 2 rounds into a wavy "splat" edge. With two strands of #6 super bulky yarn and a 10 mm hook (6 sc and 7 rows per 4 in), a 36 in (91 cm) rug takes 32 rounds and 4 white + 1 yellow skein of 300 g / 220 yd.

Good to know first: this is a calculated recipe, not a test-crocheted pattern. Every count comes from gauge math and a published rug pattern, so swatch first and lay the rug flat as you go.
A fried egg rug is home decor with a sense of humor. This recipe scales to four sizes, with a flat, puffy or double yolk.
What you need (materials list)
- Yarn, white: a #6 super bulky, washable yarn, such as the 300 g / 220 yd chenille blanket yarn the reference pattern uses, in White or Vintage White.
- Yarn, yellow: the same yarn in a yellow shade such as Burnt Mustard.
- Hook: 10 mm (US N/P-15), bought by millimeter size, such as the Knit Picks Majestic 10.0 mm hook (opens in a new tab).
- Stitch markers, a large-eye tapestry needle, scissors, tape measure.
- Non-slip rug pad, cut to size.
- For a puffy yolk: polyester fiberfill.
- Optional shortcut: the free Dino Egg Rug pattern behind this recipe’s gauge.
Holding two strands: take one strand from each of two skeins, or the center and outer end of one skein. With 1 yellow skein, use both of its ends.
Abbreviations use US terms (Craft Yarn Council): ch chain, sc single crochet, hdc half double, dc double crochet, sl st slip stitch, rnd round. UK patterns call sc “double crochet.”
Pick your yarn weight and hook
| Category (CYC) | Sc per 4 in | Hook range |
|---|---|---|
| Bulky (5) | 8–11 sts | 6.5–9 mm (K-10½ to M-13) |
| Super Bulky (6) | 7–9 sts | 9–15 mm (M-13 to Q) |
| Jumbo (7) | 6 sts and fewer | 15 mm and larger (Q and larger) |

Our reference gauge comes from the Yarnspirations pattern: 6 sc and 7 rows = 4 in (10 cm), two strands of #6 super bulky held together, 10 mm hook. Every number below depends on this gauge.
Why this rug skips increases every 9th round
Most circle patterns add 6 stitches per round, which lies flat only when stitches are about square; here rows are shorter. Our calculation: a flat circle grows by 2π × 1.52 sts per inch ÷ 1.78 rows per inch = about 5.4 stitches per round. With +6 every round, the last round would carry about 11% too many stitches (192 instead of about 172 on the 36 in rug), and the edge would ruffle.
The rule: increase 6 stitches per round as usual, but work rounds 9, 18, 27 and 36 plain, without increases. That keeps the last round within about 1% of a flat circle in all four sizes.
Along the way, the count runs ahead until the next plain round evens it out: about 11% through round 8, then about 5%, 3% and 2% just before rounds 18, 27 and 36. A slight center wave is normal; don’t add plain rounds before round 10.
Size variants: rounds and yarn for 24 to 48 inches

| Rug (diameter) | Rounds (yolk / total) | Plain rounds | Sts last round | Skeins (white + yellow) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24 in (61 cm) | 7 / 21 | 9, 18 | 114 | 2 + 1 (330 + 41 yd) |
| 30 in (76 cm) | 9 / 27 | 9, 18, 27 | 144 | 3 + 1 (516 + 65 yd) |
| 36 in (91 cm) | 11 / 32 | 9, 18, 27 | 174 | 4 + 1 (743 + 93 yd) |
| 48 in (122 cm) | 14 / 43 | 9, 18, 27, 36 | 234 | 7 + 1 (1,321 + 165 yd) |
Our calculation, rounded: rounds = radius × 1.78 rows per inch (7 rows per 10 cm = 3.94 in). Stitches = 6 × (rounds − plain rounds). Yolk = one third of the diameter (our design choice). Yarn = rug area × 0.82 yd per square inch, split by area, rounded up to whole 300 g / 220 yd skeins. For 48 in, white comes to 6.005 skeins: the 7th is your buffer.
Where 0.82 yd per square inch comes from: the reference rug is a 44 × 31 in (112 × 78.5 cm) oval, about 1,071 square inches, and lists 4 skeins of 220 yd (201 m): 880 ÷ 1,071 = 0.82, a buying quantity.
Different yarn? Crochet a 4 × 4 in sc swatch (16 square inches), weigh it, then: grams for the rug = swatch grams ÷ 16 × rug area (452, 707, 1,018 or 1,810 square inches). Or use the Yarn Calculator once it goes live.
Step-by-step: crochet the fried egg rug

Counts follow Lion Brand Yarn’s joined-rounds circle method, for the 36 in rug.
Step 1: Swatch. Crochet a 4 in sc square with two strands. You want 6 sts and 7 rows; with more, go up a hook size, with fewer, go down (Craft Yarn Council).
Step 2: Yolk (yellow).
- Rnd 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, sl st to the first sc. (6 sts)
- Rnd 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around, join. (12)
- Rnd 3: Ch 1, 2 sc in the next st, sc in the next st, repeat around, join. (18)
- Rnds 4–8: one more plain sc between increases each round. (24, 30, 36, 42, 48)
- Rnd 9: sc around, no increases. (48)
- Rnds 10–11: increase again. (54, 60) The yolk now measures about 12 in (30 cm).
Step 3: White. Change color at the round-11 join. Keep increasing, but work rounds 18 and 27 plain. Round 30 ends with 162 sts. Mark the first stitch of each round.
Step 4: Lay it flat every 3 rounds from round 10 on. Ruffles mean too many stitches: add a plain round. Cupping means too few: skip the next plain round.
Step 5: Splat edge (last 2 rounds). The edge changes stitch height, never the count: one stitch into every stitch, plus the round’s 6 increases (2 sc in one stitch) in the sc stretches.
- Rnd 31: divide the round into 6 to 8 sections of different lengths. Each section starts and ends in sc and rises through hdc to dc in the middle. (168)
- Rnd 32: sc around, but over the 3 center stitches of each lobe work hdc, dc, hdc, one stitch in each. The splat groups add no stitches; the 6 increases in the sc stretches do. (174)
Measure at the dips; the peaks stick out.
| Rug | Splat rounds | Sts (first / last splat round) |
|---|---|---|
| 24 in | 20–21 | 108 / 114 |
| 30 in | 26–27 | 144 / 144 |
| 36 in | 31–32 | 168 / 174 |
| 48 in | 42–43 | 228 / 234 |
On the 30 in rug the last round, 27, is a plain round: no increases, lobes from stitch height alone.
Step 6: Finish. Weave in the ends and add a non-slip pad.

The puffy yolk: recipe for every size

Crochet the whole rug in white and make the yolk as a separate cushion:
- Base disc: yellow, the yolk rounds from the table, with the same plain-round rule.
- Side wall: work the first wall round in the back loops only (BLO) for a crisp edge, then keep going in both loops without increases; the edge turns up into a wall.
- Top disc: a second, identical disc.
- Close: sc the top to the wall through both layers, stuff firmly before the last third, finish and sew the cushion to the rug’s center.
| Rug | Yolk diameter | Each disc: rounds (sts) | Wall rounds (height) | Yellow yarn | Fill |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24 in | 8 in (20 cm) | 7 (42) | 4 (2.2 in) | 129 yd, 1 skein | 1.9 L |
| 30 in | 10 in (25 cm) | 9 (48) | 4 (2.2 in) | 187 yd, 1 skein | 2.9 L |
| 36 in | 12 in (30 cm) | 11 (60) | 5 (2.8 in) | 273 yd, 2 skeins | 5.2 L |
| 48 in | 16 in (41 cm) | 14 (78) | 7 (3.9 in) | 493 yd, 3 skeins | 13 L |
Our calculation: wall height = one quarter of the yolk diameter (design choice) at 1.78 rows per inch. Yarn = two discs plus wall × 0.82 yd per square inch. Fill = cylinder volume before doming. The all-white rug needs 372, 581, 836 or 1,486 yd: 2, 3, 4 or 7 skeins.
Fill by weight: a rough estimate, scaled by top area from a stuffing maker’s rule of thumb (1 lb fills one 18 × 18 in pillow form): plan about 2.5, 4, 5.5 or 10 oz (70, 110, 160 or 280 g) for the 24, 30, 36 and 48 in yolks. The top domes, so buy a little more.
Double yolk. Two smaller cushions with the same total area as one: each yolk is the single yolk diameter ÷ √2.
| Rug | Each yolk | Each disc: rounds (sts) | Wall rounds | Yarn for both | Fill each |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24 in | 5.7 in (14 cm) | 5 (30) | 3 | 132 yd, 1 skein | 0.7 L |
| 30 in | 7.1 in (18 cm) | 6 (36) | 3 | 190 yd, 1 skein | 1.1 L |
| 36 in | 8.5 in (22 cm) | 8 (48) | 4 | 284 yd, 2 skeins | 2.1 L |
| 48 in | 11.3 in (29 cm) | 10 (54) | 5 | 494 yd, 3 skeins | 4.6 L |
Place them slightly apart.
Shaggy white. Work the white rounds in loop stitch, with loops about 1.5 in long (Lion Brand). The loops form on the side facing away from you, which becomes the top, so the yolk shows its wrong side; a puffy yolk hides that. Swatch and weigh first.
Common mistakes and how to fix them
| Problem | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Edge ruffles | too many sts | count; add a plain round |
| Rug cups like a bowl | too few sts | count; skip the next plain round |
| Circle turns hexagonal | increases stacked | shift the start of the increases |
| Rug too small or too big | gauge differs | swatch, change hook, recalculate |
| Rug slides | no grip | non-slip pad or backing, double-sided tape |
Ruffle, cup and corner causes: Floss Field and Lion Brand Yarn.
Safety: the CDC’s fall-prevention checklist for older adults first advises removing throw rugs, otherwise using double-sided tape or a non-slip backing. A puffy yolk is a raised edge, so with older adults at home, hang the rug or pick the flat yolk.
Care: follow your yarn label; the reference pattern says machine wash cool, dry flat.

Questions people ask
What yarn is best for a crochet egg rug?
A thick, washable yarn. This guide uses two strands of #6 super bulky chenille held together with a 10 mm (N/P-15) hook, at 6 sc per 4 in, the Craft Yarn Council's Jumbo (7) range. Other rug yarns work if you swatch and recalculate.
How much yarn do I need for a fried egg rug?
At the reference gauge, plan about 0.82 yd per square inch of rug. A 36 in (91 cm) rug works out to 4 white skeins and 1 yellow skein of 300 g / 220 yd. For any other yarn, weigh a swatch and scale it, or use the Yarn Calculator.
Why is my crochet circle rug wavy or curling up?
A wavy, ruffled edge means too many stitches; an edge that cups like a bowl means too few. At this guide's gauge, work every 9th round without increases and, from round 10 on, lay the rug flat every few rounds. If it still ruffles, add another plain round.
How do I make the yolk stand up like a cushion?
Crochet it as a separate cushion: two flat yolk discs joined by a side wall of plain rounds, stuffed with polyester fiberfill and sewn on. For the 36 in rug that is 11 rounds per disc, a 5-round wall and about 5.2 L of filling.
How do I keep a crochet rug from slipping?
Use a non-slip pad or backing, or double-sided tape. The CDC's checklist for older adults first says to remove throw rugs; in such homes, hang the rug on a wall.
